Two sites win our first Green Space Business Awards

30 March 2017
The Green Space Business Award is a project developed through our partnership with DS Smith. Initially awarded to their sites, the scheme has now been extended to other businesses that demonstrate a commitment to improving local parks and green spaces through volunteering and fundraising initiatives.

The Award encourages businesses to take more responsibility within their local community, by supporting and building relationships with community groups, and in doing so, helping to improve the environmental standards in nearby green spaces.

We are delighted to announce our first award winners

Two exceptional DS Smith sites were the first to accept their awards. The DS Smith Bolton recycling team received their award for their continuous hard work with Friends of Longsight Park community group. Since beginning their work with the friends group two years ago, they combine their commitment and efforts to develop and maintain the local Longsight Park.

DS Smith Crumlin packaging team received their award for transforming their site. They have laid a pathway through a wooded area and installed a bench and table. This enables their employees to enjoy the scenic route to their staff car park and have somewhere to enjoy the outdoors, nature and fresh air during working hours. The new furniture has also been used to hold meetings on fine days.  In addition, Crumlin have developed an allotment, where dedicated employees with green fingers can grow their own produce.

DS Smith Group Health, Safety and Environment Director Mark Greenwood said: “We strongly encourage other companies to follow our lead by supporting and preserving the parks and green spaces in the vicinity of their operations.  Through our partnership with Keep Britain Tidy we have built good relationships with local community groups across the country and have found our volunteer work , on a personal level, to be very rewarding.  If we all made a small contribution, together we can achieve great things.”

Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: “We are delighted to present the first Green Space Business Award to DS Smith. Over the past three years they have supported our Green Flag Awards programme and their employees have given over 340 hours of their time to volunteering in parks and green spaces. If we are to maintain the standards in our parks we need more businesses to follow the example of DS Smith and understand the vital role they can play.
