Introducing our new litter heroes of 2017

20 January 2017

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) is the oldest Muslim youth organisation in the UK. They have thousands of British Muslim youth volunteers across the 130 local chapters between the ages of seven and 40 years old.

AMYA has partnered up with many organisations to support various charitable causes and contribute to their local communities in countless ways. This has included tree planting, fundraising for British charities, visiting elderly people in care homes, blood donations, feeding sessions for homeless people and food bank donations.

One of these initiatives is the Big Clean-up on New Year’s Day when almost all 130 local branches arranged for a litter picking session early morning knowing that the New Year’s Eve celebrations leave large amounts of litter on the streets. In collaboration with councils in most cases, the AMYA volunteers go out in large numbers to take part in cleaning sessions all over the UK covering all major cities.

Farhad Ahmad, a national representative of AMYA and British Imam said, “We feel strongly that it is our religious and civic duty to organise these cleaning sessions and raise awareness about this topic in general. From a religious perspective, both cleanliness and looking after our local communities is an essential part of the Islamic faith."

Our newest litter heroes are also Ambassadors for the Great British Spring Clean. If you are inspired by their story, and whatever your reasons for wanting to improve your local area, why not get involved in a spring clean too. It only takes a minute to register at www.greatbritishspringclean.org.uk and join an event or start planning your own.
