A community group consisting of residents and visitors from all around the park's boundaries and beyond. We include practical conservation volunteers, a volunteer engineer team, and a community cafe team.
We’re very lucky to have this big and beautiful (650 acres) park and to have retained our ranger team, although now cut to a shadow of its old self. Notts County Council (NCC) allow us to use one of the historic buildings on our site – known as the Dynamo House - for our Community Cafe on Saturday mornings, which is jointly run by volunteers from the Friends group and Bestwood Village WI. The House stands next to the Bestwood Colliery Winding Engine House. Dating back to the heyday of Victorian industrial engineering, the Winding House was restored by volunteers and HLF funding and is now open to the public on Saturdays.
The Cafe’s success since it opened as a trial run in July 2012 has enabled us to buy various things for the park including wild bird seed for feeders by the classroom, benches, a picnic table, and wood-working tools for the rangers. We have also had printed a Tree Trail booklet, and just recently The Bestwood Timeline booklet which shows the images and texts compiled by NCC and on display on the Dynamo House wall. It summarises the history of our park from 6000 BC to the present. Among other projects, we’re planning to apply for funding for an extension to the building to follow up on the success of the Cafe.
